Grade 6 music

Had a horrific time teaching music to grade sixes last term. How do you make it interesting, fun nod relevant to kids who can't see a need to learn music?

Are you teaching General Music or Choir? I teach K-5 music and my 5th graders are sometimes hard to please. They love doing Orff things. They also enjoy singing games like "Ye Toop Doram," or "Our Old Sow." I try to include a lot of variety and I also let them know that there will be no complaining! This age groups is sometimes hard to teach!

The challenge for me this year is that my 5th graders are not very musical at all and last year 5th grade was VERY musical. These kids just don't enjoy to sing and because they're already in 5th grade, it's hard for me to undo things that the previous teacher did with them. I think that by the time that my current 2nd graders are in 5th grade, my work will start to really show!

Thanks for your comments Joy. I have only been teaching music at our school for two years as I was a classroom teacher before that and music wnt a specialist subject before that. I agree that by the time the younger children get to grade six they may have a better appreciation for music and greater skills and confidence to perform

What particular music resources do you use? We don't seem to have access to as much in the way of music resources in Australia

6th Grade can be difficult because in most areas they're no longer subject to a compulsory music class by that age. Those that are often have band or orchestra as options as well.

Does your school have all 6th graders coming to General Music? Are there ensembles or is this the only music class?

All grade 6 children have to come to music as a class.
