More cheating!!
I gave this very short assignment to my students:
As we move into the second semester, I would like to ask you to describe your plans for academic success in our class. Here are some questions to consider:
How do you define academic success? Overall grade, test grades, no missing assignments, or something else?
What will you be doing to be successful? This can include your plans for studying, in-class behavior, preparedness, note-taking, tutoring, turning in all your work on time, using class time appropriately, etc.
How will you make sure that you stick to your plan?
Please submit your ONE-PARAGRAPH, thoughtful response by clicking "Turn in" on this post and typing your response. This is due by Wednesday.
Most of the responses I received were thoughtful and personal. Students identified their own areas of weakness and strategies to help overcome those weaknesses.
One student submitted a response that just sounded strange and not in her "voice". I ran a fragment through Google. Yep, she plagiarized her plan for academic success.
Ironic? Or just sad?
I have no more words for this cheating epidemic.

That's actually really funny.
Do students not realize how easy it is to identify their voice?

I did laugh at the ridiculousness of it, but, yeah...very sad and pathetic. It's as though some are programmed to cheat or somehow rely on the Internet.

I was in another classroom yesterday and saw a student walking up to the teacher's desk several times. ( I was filling in for another sped co-teacher.) It was in the middle of a math test and the other teacher was working on her lesson plans. (Something she wasn't suppose to be doing)I walked up to the desk and saw another student's completed test turned in face up.
I'm sure the student was cheating. The gen ed teacher just laughed and said it happens all the time.

Actually, I'm pretty sure our school has been at the point for some time now that I'd actually be thrilled if any of our students put forth the effort to cheat.
It would show that, for a change, they want to fulfill the assignment and it sure would beat the usual and endless series of responses of "I don't know."

I had one today
I had one today who stared off into space for the first 10 minutes, left her book open to question 11, then frantically bubbled in 20-30 as her neighbor was completing those pages. She then realized I was watching, so she jumped to the end of the test.

No words. How on earth do you plagiarize a personal statement?
