Actually, she made the poor choice of posting photos of her students on Facebook. Period.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the teacher having duct tape in her room or giving duct tape to her students to use to fix a binder, but a teacher who has taught for 10 years can reasonably be expected to know that you don't post pics of a student on the internet without a parent's consent.

Why would anyone post a picture of their students on facebook? Stupid...

And duct tape?! Really?! Why on earth are they questioning why it was in the classroom? There are so many uses for duct tape, especially the new tape with fun patterns and designs. Kids LOVE that stuff!

Facebook, blogs, anything in the public realm is fine as long as a generous dollop of common sense.

I had a friend in college who was going to school to be a Pediatrician. She worked at an after school day care for extra money. One day she jokingly asked the kids to be quiet or she would have to tape their mouths shut. Two little girls started giggling and begged her to do it. She put one piece of scotch tape over each of their mouths for approximately 5 seconds. When one of the parents came to pick her child up, the child told the mom what happened. The mother SUED the school. Luckily no charges were filed against her, and I think the school system settled for a small sum of money. Nevertheless, things can seem innocent at the time, and hindsight is 20/20.

I solve Facebook problems by having two accounts under my name. One people can find and one they can't unless they have a direct link to it. The unsearchable one is where I post any controversy or potentially offensive things. This isn't saying where I would posting photos without permission or private information, but basically just things I wouldn't want people I work with or parents of students to see.

It also states right on the article that the school board isn't concerned about the duct tape, but about the privacy of the students. If it wasn't for the photos none of this would even be an issue as the kids put it on their own mouths as a joke.
