Would just like to add that play based and open ended does NOT mean there is no objective. There should be structure/a POINT to every activity. Giving kids paper and art supplies and telling them to just go has a place, but it can not be the basis for every art activity. Check out prekinders.com and pre-kpages.com. They have lots of wonderful, PLAY BASED activities with specific objectives.
