Reference Letter from Principal

Last year was my first year teaching. I worked in an interim position. Although I never received any really negative feedback, I was not offered another position at the school this year. I am currently seeking employment in another district. This district has requested a reference from my principal from last year.
My plan is to email him and ask him if he minds the district contacting for a reference. What would be the best way to work this email? Thanks!

I would call him instead of emailing. It's more professional and personal.

I would email rather than call. Emailing allows people to respond on their own time and they can give it better attention. A phone call can be disruptive and you can catch them at an off moment.
